Giving the GRE is not a very costly affair (a la USMLE) . Giving the GRE itself costs around Rs.5500 . You might add some more bucks in there if you are going to delay your exam (much more likely than you think possible.. :) )

However, after you give the GRE, you will have to shell out some more money (ETS is a private company remember?) in order to send copies of those scores to the colleges you want to apply to. There is no centralized admission procedure in the US and hence, you will have to pay for individual copies for each of the colleges you are going to apply to...
